Job Summary:

UW Veterinary Care (UWVC) is excited to welcome a Veterinary Dialysis Technician to our Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) team.

In this role you will be responsible for providing high-level technical support and advanced veterinary patient nursing care in a specialized dialysis service. This role involves performing extracorporeal therapy services, managing intensive care inpatients, and collaborating with veterinarians and other technicians to ensure quality patient care. The technician will also instruct veterinary students and assist in research projects, while maintaining a clean and well-stocked dialysis unit.

Responsibilities:

Tasks:

  • Work closely with other hospital services to call in back-up support for emergent patient care
  • Assist with the care and regular nursing needs for patients housed in critical care unit
  • Assist with catheter placement (iv, urinary, etc.)
  • Assist with filling pharmaceutical requests after-hours for hospitalized patients
  • Assist in radiographing patients after-hours
  • Assist with sedation and anesthesia for patients in the ECC
  • Assist the Emergency and Critical Care Units (ECC) with client communications. Document client communications in the patient log.
  • Ensure charges are entered in a timely and correct manner for hospital patients
  • Collect and submit patient lab samples
  • Follow all hospital and UW campus policies and procedures
  • Gain knowledge on unit equipment and use. Assist with unit equipment operation and regular maintenance. Advise supervisor of equipment issues or repair needs, as needed.
  • Participate in rotating on-call shifts as required by the hospital
  • Participate and assist in the training and mentoring of less experienced staff and students
  • Prioritize, triage and stabilization of patients
  • Bring a positive, helpful attitude to the unit and the hospital
  • Be a team player, and work together with colleagues to best meet patient needs
  • Perform extracorporeal therapy services and provide intensive care to inpatients

Qualifications:

Experience working with extracorporeal therapies required.
Technical skills in advanced IV catheter placement, feeding tube placement, and intensive care monitoring required.

Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks.

This position is posted at Vet Tech levels 2 and 3. Level is determined by qualifications based on type of prior veterinary tech experience.

To qualify for Level 2: Generally over 2 years of veterinary tech experience, may substitute years of experience for specialization.

To qualify for Level 3: Veterinary Tech Specialist (VTS), or highly qualified and specialized in a specific area, may have prior experience from another university hospital.

Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday from 7:30am - 4:00pm with a 30-minute unpaid lunch.

Position will include holiday and weekend shifts. Potential for additional on-call hours as required by the hospital.

Sign-on Bonus of 3-5% of base pay (based on FTE) to be paid over the first year of employment!

In addition to the base pay listed in this posting, ECC positions offer a substantial $3.00/hour increase on top of your base pay. Opting for a flexible schedule further enhances your earnings with an additional $2.00/ hour. Earn an extra $3.00/hour for night shifts and $1.80/hour for weekends, creating a total shift incentive potential of nearly $10.00/ hour!
