Under general direction, the Principal Planner performs the most complex and sensitive planning duties; and serves as staff resource in technical areas to plan, organize and coordinate programs and projects for professional, technical and clerical staff in a fast-paced work environment and highly engaged community. The Principal Planner provides supervision of the current and long-range planning projects and programs. Exciting long-range projects include the Housing Element Update and a variety of housing-related initiatives.

IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in Urban Planning or City/Regional Planning, Public Administration or related field. A Master’s degree in a Planning related field is desired. Five (5) or more years of increasingly responsible municipal planning and management experience, preferably in current and long-range planning. In addition to, Two (2) or more years in a supervisory role. The ideal candidate has the possession of American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Certification. The incumbent will demonstrate exceptional organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in Urban Planning or City/Regional Planning, Public Administration or related field is required. A Master’s degree in a Planning related field is desired.
Experience: At least Five (5) years of increasingly responsible municipal planning and management experience, preferably in current and long-range planning. At least Two (2) of the five years in a supervisory role is required.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work of a Principal Planner may also be qualifying.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Certification or the ability to obtain certification within one year of appointment.
The ability to convey oneself to and from geographical locations frequently and timely, or possession of a valid CA driver’s license.
Retirement: The City is a part of the CalPERS retirement plan and does not contribute to Social Security
Classic employees – 2% @55 formula, highest 3 year average compensation
PEPRA employees – hired after 1/1/13 or Classic employee with 6 month break in service are eligible for a 2% @ 62 formula, highest 3 year average compensation
Cafeteria Benefit Plan: The City offers a healthy cafeteria benefit program including choices among plan options for medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short and long-term disability; an Education and Wellness Reimbursement Program ($2000 per fiscal year toward related education, and up to $1000 of that may be used for wellness expenses.
Leave: City Management (Non-Represented) unit employees who are in the FLSA exempt position are granted eighty (80) hours of Administrative Leave per calendar year, and earn 136 hours of vacation and 96 hours of sick leave per year
