Junior, Assistant, Associate, and Full Specialist- Clinical Research in Sports Medicine

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF invites motivated students and graduates to apply for a position as Junior, Assistant, Associate, and Full Specialist in Clinical Research, focusing on women's sports medicine.

This 12-month position offers the opportunity to conduct original research and contribute to advancements in sports medicine, with a focus on women, within a globally-recognized institution.

We particularly encourage applicants who are passionate about pursuing a career in clinical orthopaedic surgery. This role provides opportunities to specialize in several cutting-edge research areas including:

  • Injury Prevention: Investigating effectiveness of injury prevention programs and developing new protocols.
  • Innovative Surgical Techniques : Exploring advancements in minimally invasive sports medicine procedures.
  • Health Disparities in Sports Medicine: Evaluating inequities in access to surgical care, outcomes among underrepresented populations, and barriers to care delivery.
  • Post-Surgical Outcomes and Rehabilitation: Developing protocols for improving time to return to sports, minimizing complications, and optimizing long-term function and health.
  • Comprehensive Care of Female Athletes: Addressing the care of the entire female athlete including bone health, sports performance, distinct life phases and considerations during puberty, pregnancy, and perimenopausal states.

Applicants will engage in multidisciplinary collaboration with leading surgeons, sports nutritionist, sports psychology, physicians from various departments, and healthcare specialists including physical therapists and athletic trainers contributing to UCSF's mission to advance orthopaedic care and research.

Core Research Activities:

  • Conducting literature reviews to identify knowledge gaps and formulate research questions.
  • Developing testable hypotheses.
  • Designing and conducting studies (prospective and retrospective).
  • Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data using advanced statistical methods.
  • Preparing and submitting manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.
  • Presenting findings at academic conferences.-Contributing to grant applications for research funding.

Qualifications:

  • Junior Specialist: Bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree) in a relevant field, such as Kinesiology, Sports Medicine, or Biomedical Sciences, or a related discipline or at least four years of research experience, with demonstrated research experience.
  • Assistant Specialist: Master's degree (or equivalent degree) in a relevant field, such as Kinesiology, Sports Medicine, or Biomedical Sciences, or a related discipline or Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with 3 or more years of research experience.
  • Associate Specialist: Master's degree (or equivalent degree) in a relevant field, such as Kinesiology, Sports Medicine, or Biomedical Sciences, or a related discipline or five or more years of relevant experience.
  • Full Specialist: terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in a relevant field, such as Kinesiology, Sports Medicine, or Biomedical Sciences, or a related discipline or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Applicant must have all requirements met by time of hire.
  • Applicants' materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.

Preferred Experience:

  • Post-graduate training in orthopaedic research or related fields.
  • Experience with grant writing and overseeing research projects.
  • Familiarity with clinical trials and regulatory compliance.
